Stainless steel turned out to be an accident

Stainless steel was accidentally discovered in England in 1912. Harry Brearley invented stainless steel, but this was not his original intention. It was a completely unexpected product.

Harry Brearley is working for gun manufacturers and trying to find more wear-resistant materials. The inner diameter of the barrel wears out too quickly due to heat and exhaust gas. He tried to add 10-20% chromium to the steel.

He didn’t handle the failed batches properly, just left them outside. A few months later, he noticed that they didn’t rust and found stainless steel.

Others said that when trying to analyze the steel / chromium mixture under a microscope, he first needed to etch it with nitric acid, and he found it extremely corrosion resistant.

Scientist Bradley named his new invention “rustless steel”. Businessman Stuart was very dissatisfied and changed it to “stainless steel”, which is still used today. The Chinese translation is very grounded: stainless steel, people can understand it at a glance. Brearley applied for a U.S. patent in 1915 and later that year published an article in the New York Times introducing stainless steel to the world.

Today, stainless steel is everywhere in the modern world. It can be used in everything from manufacturing, automotive, aerospace and construction industries to surgical instruments, locks and anything that may be exposed to the weather.

Modern stainless steels also add nickel to the mixture. The ratio of 18% chromium and 8% nickel is the most common stainless steel grade, which is usually shortened to 18-8 or 304 stainless steel.

However, brailly was not the first discoverer of stainless steel. At the beginning of the 20th century, two French engineers, Guye and poluz, had found that the metal mixed with chromium in iron had brightness and corrosion resistance. Because they didn’t know the usefulness of this alloy at that time, they threw it away rashly.

In 1912, hermos of the United States also made stainless steel. At the same time, German metallurgical experts schustrauss and Mauler also found that adding chromium and nickel in smelting can make stainless steel. Their findings are almost on the same starting line as brelly in England, but they don’t ask why they have observed the strange phenomena? However, it stopped before entering the scientific gate of continuous research, so it passed by the honorary crown of stainless steel for the first time and the great economic benefits obtained from its development and utilization.

Stainless Steel Elbow

Later, scientists found that the reason why stainless steel can be so corrosion-resistant is that when it is exposed to the air, the chromium element on its surface forms a dense layer of chromium trioxide. This layer of oxide film is so thin that it will not affect the smoothness and gold luster of the metal surface. This layer of oxide film will not continue to react with water and air. When the surface is scratched, a new oxide film will be formed rapidly. Although aluminum alloy is lighter than steel and resistant to corrosion, the oxide film on the surface is gray and not as bright as stainless steel. On the other hand, aluminum is softer, while chromium is the hardest metal. The Mohs hardness is as high as 9, so it is not easy to wear. Although the cost of stainless steel is high, it is still widely used.

Because all stainless steels are determined by the content of their constituent elements, not any kind of stainless steel can resist the invasion and corrosion of various media: Generally speaking, stainless steel can only prevent atmospheric exposure corrosion (corrosion of temperature, humidity, sunshine, rainfall and atmospheric dirt), and the surface will be colored or even rusty over time. However, these defects can not erase the brilliance of stainless steel performance, nor can they shake the position of being laid a broad application. Known as stainless steel, it is a major scientific discovery that changed the process of human civilization in the 20th century.
